Est.
time of return: 4:00pm
Member
Tom Morrow will assist Frank by leading us on different trails
as we hike down to the area of the Knagge cabin ruins.
We’ll take time to attempt locating their old mine
workings.
After we’ll have our lunch on an overlook where we can
see the damage of the Bullock fire.
The trailhead is just past the Palisade Range Station on
the Mt. Lemmon highway. It may be chilly up at the higher
altitudes.
Bring water, snacks, lunch and a camera.

We will
travel to the eastern slopes of the Catalina Mountains where a
prison camp was located which housed the unfortunate souls who
constructed the original Mt. Lemon highway.
From the prison camp, we’ll drop down Soldier Canyon
700 feet and 2.3 miles to the Sycamore Reservoir at the junction
of Bear Canyon. We
can rest at the dam and explore the surrounding area before
heading back uphill to the prison site.
Bring at least 2 liters of water and a lunch.
Golden Age Passport required.
A $3.00/per person carpool fee suggested.
Thursday,
April 7th

Romero
Pass
Depart:
7:00am
Hike
Leader:
Dave Rogers
, 579-2585
Est. time of return: 5:00pm
This
is a very difficult A+ hike with breathtaking views.
We will depart from Catalina State Part and hike into
Montrose and Romero Canyons gaining 3,300 along the way to
Romero Pass.
It’s been two years since the Aspen fire devastated
this area, so it’ll be interesting to see if this winter’s
rains aided with it’s recovery.
We may stash some water along the way to make the going
easier and retrieve it on the return leg.
Besides water, bring power bars and lunch.
There’s a $6.00 entrance fee at the park.
A $1.00/per person carpool fee suggested.
Monday,
April 11th
Level: D, 2.8 miles, 400ft
Linda
Vista, Orientation
Depart:
8:00am
Hike
Leader: George Hammond, 579-3296
Est. time of return: 11:30am
Participation
in an orientation hike is required by all new hikers and
experienced hikers who are hiking for the first time with
Heritage Highlands Hikers.
Linda
Vista Trail is ideal
to expose the new hiker to trail conditions they’ll experience
while hiking on the desert level trails while gaining 400ft in
elevation. The hike
leader will also provide information about hiking with the
group. Orientation
hikes are not limited to just new hikers, anyone can sign up for
these easy level hikes. Bring
a half-liter of water. A
$1.00 per/person carpool fee is suggested
Monday,
April 11th
Level: B-, 9 miles, 500ft
Chivas
Falls, Rincon Mt. Range
Depart:
7:30am
Hike
Leader: Tom Feldsein, 744-0887
Est. time of return: 2:30pm
This will be a return
visit to Chivas Falls in the Rincon range off of Redington Rd.
(dirt for last five miles).
We will be making a loop hiking primarily on dirt roads
used by mountain bikers and 4 wheelers but there shouldn’t be
traffic during the week. The
area into the falls is generally rolling so we will have
relatively little elevation gain; just ups and downs for approx.
4.5 miles to the falls. The
falls are some 90 feet tall and can be quite spectacular when
water is flowing but that will be unknown for this adventure.
With the weather getting warmer, bring plenty of water,
snacks and lunch. A
$3.00/per person car-pool fee is suggested.
Tuesday,
April 12th
Level: C+, 3,8 miles, 800ft
Aspen
Loop Trail
Depart: 7:30am
Hike
Leader: George Hammond, 579-3296
Est.
time of return: 3:00pm
The
cause of the Aspen Fire was allegedly a careless hiker who was
on the Aspen Trail.
We haven’t taken this trail in the two years since the
fire.
The hike starts just beyond Summerhaven on Mt. Lemmon at
Marshall Gulch.
The 1.2-mile Marshall Gulch Trails steeply climbs 800ft
to Marshall Saddle.
From the saddle we’ll follow The Aspen Trail up and
down as it circles Marshall Peak then brings us back to the
parking lot.
Along the way we’ll venture out to Lunch Rock for a
break and majestic vistas.
On the way home, some may elect to stop in Summerhaven
for a slice of pie, (pricey, but worth it).
Golden Age Passport or fee required.
A $4.00/per person carpool fee suggested.
Saturday,
April 16th
Level:
B-, 5.6 miles, 900ft
Romero
Pools
Depart:
7:30am
Hike
Leader: Dewey Fitch, 579-5337
Est. time of return: 1:00pm
Romero
Canyon Trail is one of the most popular and scenic trails that
will take us into the inner canyons of the Catalina Mts.
With only 900ft gain over the 2.8 miles to the turnaround
point at what’s known as Romero Pools, is not so difficult for
a quick Saturday hike..
The vistas along the way make this one not to miss.
This hike would be a great first B level trek for some
members.
The trailhead is in the Catalina State Park, which has a
$6.00 entrance fee; Golden Age Passport
doesn’t help.
Bring at least 1 ltr water and lunch.
A $1.00/per person carpool fee suggested
Saturday,
April 16th
Level: B-, 5,6 miles, 900ft
Romero
Pools, at a slow pace
Depart: 8:00am
Hike
Leader: Betty Wacker, 572-3874
Est.
Time of return: 2:00pm
This
slow paced hike was cancelled in February due to road closures.
Same hike description as above but at a slower pace and
starting a half hour later.
It’ll be warmer now so bring extra water.
Monday April 18th
Level: C+, 4 miles? 400ft?
Windy Point to Seven Cataracts
Depart:
7:30am
Hike
Leader: Tom Feldsein, 744-0887
Est. time of return: 3:00pm?
This
hike begins at Windy Point, fourteen miles up the Mt. Lemmon
highway.
From there it’ll be an adventurous bushwhack down into
the area of Seven Cataracts.
If you haven’t done any “off trail” hiking before,
please check with Tom for more details.
One neat thing of this hike is you’ll be able to stop
on the way home at the Seven Cataracts parking area to view the
entire area you hiked.
It’s getting warm, so bring adequate water and a lunch.
Golden Age Passport or parking fee required.
A $4.00/per person carpool fee suggested.
Wednesday,
April 20th
Level:
B+, 5.4 miles, 1,980ft
Bog
Spring / Kent Spring Loop Trail
Depart: 8:00am
Hike
Leader:
Barb Farr
, 572-7174
Est. time of return: 3:30pm
We’ll travel to Madera
Canyon in the Santa Rita Mts. for this aggressive B+ level hike.
In the past, we have hiked to Bog Spring; now we’ll
continue to Kent Spring gaining 1,980 feet over the first 3.8
miles of this 5.4-mile loop.
After leaving Kent Spring, the fun begins as we come down
a challengingly steep old mine road.
Hold on! This
is an excellent trail that’s entirely in forested areas with
some great views from several ridge tops.
Bring 1.5 – 2 liters of water, power bars, and lunch.
Golden Age Passport or fee required for Madera Canyon.
A $5.00/per person carpool fee suggested.
Thursday,

Mount
Wrightson aka Old Baldy
Depart: 6:30am
Hike
Leader:
Dave Rogers
, 579-2585
Est.
time of return: 5:00pm
This
will be a direct ascent of Mount Wrightson using the Old Baldy
Trail.
Some folks might want to shorten the trek by stopping at
Baldy Saddle and waiting for the rest of the group to continue
600ft more to the peak.
The 9,543ft Old Baldy is the tallest peak in the Santa
Rita’s and can be seen while heading south on Dove Mountain
Blvd.
It might still get cool as you gain elevation so be
prepared.
Bring plenty of water, power bars and lunch.
Golden Age Passport or fee required in Madera Canyon.
A $5.00/per person carpool fee suggested.
Thursday,
April 21st
Level: D+. 3.5 miles
Sabino Canyon Moonlight Walk

Hike Leader: George Hammond, 579-3296
The

In conjunction with this arrangement, the Hiking Club is
planning to walk down the Canyon using the tram road after
riding the tram to the end at stop 9.
Guest and non-hiking spouses welcome.
The club has extended an invitation to any HH resident
who wishes to join us on this walk.
Tram tickets must be purchased ($7.50) at the Clubhouse
before March 28th.

Chiricahua
Mts.
Depart: 7:30am
Hike Leader: George Hammond, 579-3296
Est. time of return: 8:00pm
Because
of the large number of new members, we’ve decided to schedule
this spectacular hike again this year, include additional fun
packed activities as well.
It’s a two and a half hour drive to the Chiricahua
National Monument where we’ll hike several trails in and
around an area known as “The Heart of Rocks”.
Those taking the D+ hike can visit the Faraway Ranch
while waiting for the other group to finish. This area is part
of the National Park Service; so bring your Golden Ages Pass to
avoid an entrance fee.
Besides stopping in Wilcox for apple pies and then Benson
for dinner on the drive home, we’re working on another
activity with details to be announced via email. Bring plenty of
water, snacks, camera, and lunch.
Each car should have a cooler for other drinks too;
it’s a long day.
You must sign up by Monday, April 25th for
this hike.
A
$7.00/per person carpool fee suggested

Hike

Apache Junction, to hike one of the most popular trails in
Arizona.
We’ll hike 2.5 miles with a 1,400 ft gain to Freemont
Saddle.
Here we’ll have a spectacular view of Weavers Needle,
the alleged location of the Lost Dutchman’s mine.
It’s getting a little warmer now so we’ll start
early.
This will be an all day trip so bring plenty of water,
snacks, and lunch.
Bring your Golden age Passport.
A $5.00/per person carpool fee.
