MAY  2005    HIKE  SCHEDULE

Monday, May 2nd                                                                                                    Level: B, 8.5 miles, 1,000ft

Marshall Gulch to Lemmon Creek                                                                     Depart: 7:30am

Hike Leader: Tom Feldsien, 744-0887                                                                 Est. time of return: 4:30pm

This hike starts at the Marshall Gulch Picnic area where we’ll climb 500’ to Marshall Saddle where five trails intersect.  From the Saddle we’ll drop nearly 900’ using the Wilderness of Rocks trail then semi-bushwhack over to Lemmon Creek.  We’ll be moving amongst fantastic rock formations in search of a lunch spot and turnaround point.  After lunch we’ll take our time heading back up (1,000’) to the Saddle.  This is a great area to explore. Bring at least two liters of water, power snacks and lunch.  Golden Age Passports or fee required.  On Mondays, pilot cars run every hour through the road construction site on Mt. Lemmon highway.  A $5.00/per person carpool fee suggested.

Thursday, May 5th                                                                                              Level: B+, 5.8 miles, 1,700ft

Blackett’s Ridge, Sabino Canyon (Slower pace)                                          Depart: 7:00am

Hike Leader: Dave Rogers , 579-2585                                                           Est. time of return: 1:00pm

This is a great hike to check out your condition. This trail takes us to the top of the land mass between Sabino and Bear Canyons known as Saddleback Ridge.  As you walk down into Lower Sabino , you’ll have a grand view of the entire ridge.  We’ll gain 1,700 ft along 2.9 miles.  There are few finer places to have your lunch than at the end of Blackett’s Ridge Trail.  Bring your camera, at least 2 lts of water, snacks, and a nice lunch.  There’s a $5.00 parking fee at Sabino Canyon or use a Golden Age Passport. A $3.00/per person carpool fee suggested.

Friday, May 6th                                                                                                      Level: A, 8.5 miles, 2,300ft

Red Ridge-Oracle Ridge Loop                                                                              Depart: 7:00am

Hike Leader: Frank Price, 579-8013                                                                   Est. time of return: 5:00pm

This is a loop hike from the top of Mt. Lemmon , down the Red Ridge Trail 3.1 miles to Catalina Camp, then 1.7 miles over to Dan Saddle, then up Oracle Ridge trail 3.1 miles back to the top.  It’ll be ideal if we have at least two cars to be able to shuttle between trailheads.  It’s still chilly on top of Mt Lemmon, so dress accordantly.  Bring enough water, snacks and lunch for this long day.  Golden Age Passport or fee required for trails on Mt. Lemmon .  A $5.00/per person carpool fee suggested.

Saturday, May 7th                                                                                                  Level: C-, 3.9 miles, 400ft

Mt. Bigelow to Incinerator Ridge                                                                        Depart: 7:00am

Hike Leader: Tom Feldsien, 744-0887                                                               Est. time of return: 2:30pm

This is an easy hike up in the Catalina Mts.  The hike starts at the lower Butterfly trail head, goes a short distance to a spur trail to the top of Mt Bigelow where we’ll be able to climb the fire lookout tower to get a great view.  Mt. Bigelow also has most of the television transmitter towers for the Tucson stations.  We’ll come down to connect with the Kellogg trail , then the Incinerator Ridge trail for a short distance to our turnaround point.  After the hike we can go up to Summerhaven for lunch or pie.  It still gets cool at the 8,000ft level trailhead.  Bring water and snacks.  Golden Age Passport or fee required for trails on Mt. Lemmon .  A $5.00/per person carpool fee suggested.
