MAY,
2004 HIKE
SCHEDULE
Monday, May 3rd
Level: B+,
5.7 miles, 1,250ft
Butterfly
Trail,
Mt.
Lemmon
Depart:
7:00am
Hike Leader:
Dave Rogers, 579-2585
Est. time of return:
5:00pm
This hike will require cars to be
dropped off across from the Palisades Ranger Station.
We will then continue up the
Catalina Highway
to the 23.5 mile mark and park the remaining vehicles.
The Butterfly Trail is in the area destroyed by the
Bullock Fire. In
1957 two F86 Saber Jets collided over the Catalina’s.
One of the jets crashed ¼ mile from the Butterfly Trail.
We will try and locate the remains of this jet.
The trail guide describes this trail as being located in
a thick forest of ponderosa pines and fir.
However, that was before the Bullock Fire.
Bring lunch, snacks and at least 2 lts of water.
If there is interest, we will stop at the Mt Lemmon Café
for pie after the hike.
Saturday,
May 8th
Level: D+, B;
3.5 or 8.5 miles
Chiricahua
Mts.
Depart:
7:00am
Hike Leader:
George Hammond, 579-3296
Est. time of return:
8:00pm
Because of
the large number of new members, we’ve decided to schedule
this spectacular hike again and to do it on a Saturday
to enable those hikers who work during the week to enjoy
this fun filled day trip, It’s
a two and a half hour drive to the Chiricahua National Monument
where we’ll hike several trails in and around an area known as
“The Heart of Rocks”. Those
taking the D+ hike can visit the Faraway Ranch while waiting for
the other group to finish. We’ll
make this an all day venture by stopping in Wilcox for apple
pies and then Benson for dinner on the drive home.
This area is part of the National Park Service, so bring
your
Golden

Pass
to avoid an
entrance fee. Bring
plenty of water, snacks, camera, and lunch.
Each car should have a cooler for other drinks too;
it’s a long day. You
Must sign up by Thursday, May 6tth
for this hike.
Wednesday, May 19th
Level: A, 10.4 miles, 3,325ft.
Josephine
Peak
Depart:
7:30
Hike Leader: Frank Price, 579-8013
Est. time of return:
4:00pm
We’ll start out at
Madeira
Canyon
, hike up Baldy Trail to Josephine Saddle, switch to Super Trail
and head to the south side of
Mt.
Wrightson
, then take a seldom used rough trail (route) to the top of
Josephine
Peak
. With a 3,234ft
gain over 5.2 miles, those die-hard hikers should love this one.
We did this hike in Oct. 2002 and found to be an
excellent hike in a thick forested area.
Note: If
construction is still active at the trailhead, we’ll do an
alterative hike. We’ll
take an old mine road heading to Kent Spring for a short while
before bushwacking over to the Super Trail and continue to
Josephine Saddle and return.
Let’s hope the construction is complete because hiking
to
Josephine
Peak
is an excellent venture. Bring a minimum 3 lts of water, power
bars and lunch.
Monday, May 24th
Level: A+, 9.4 miles, 3,680 ft.
Mt.
Wrightson
via
Gardner
Canyon
Depart:
6:00am
Hike Leader: Tom
Feldsein, 744-0887
Est. time of return:
5:00pm
4WD vehicles
are required to reach the trailhead at the end of
Gardner
Canyon
on the southeast side of the Santa Rita Mts.
It’s a fun ride. The
Gardner Canyon Trail is the shortest approach to Old Baldy and
quite picturesque as you hike through a ponderosa pine forest.
Some folks might want to just rest and take in the sun at
Baldy Saddle rather than continue the 700 ft to the Peak.
Bring a camera, at least three liters of water, power
bars and lunch for this great hike.
Phone
assigned hike leader to sign up or with questions.
Departure is from the Clubhouse parking lot at time
listed
